Traffic Information

Mayor Chegwidden has asked the Police Department to address the various complaints in the Borough concerning traffic violations. In the short term, the WPD has been and will continue to assign patrol officers to specific streets for traffic enforcement. The public can assist the WPD by completing the traffic complaint form on our website at: https://whartonpolice.com/index.php/more-info/report-a/traffic-complaint or call us at 973-366-0557, “0” to report any specific violations. Some residents use this form or have contacted us already and have provided us with some additional information such as a specific vehicle, time of day or direction of violations. We thank them and appreciate their time and effort. We also use electronic message boards and signs to display and collect data on streets for traffic volume, peak traffic times and speed surveys. Some signs are set to display the vehicles speed and some are set just to collect data. We use this data to direct our patrol resources for traffic enforcement. In the long term (2023), the WPD will be creating a new traffic unit that will focus on identified traffic problem locations and focus on traffic education and enforcement. In the meantime, our patrol officers have been advised to focus more on enforcement of traffic violations than education. Please obey all the traffic laws and keep all of us safe. Reminder that almost all of our local Borough streets have a 25mph limit. Drive safely and we thank you for your cooperation.
