ATTENTION FIREARMS APPLICANTS

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY

Applicants looking for an initial, modified, or replacement Firearms Identification Card (FID), or permits to purchase handguns will now apply online via https://njportal.com/NJSP/FARS.

The Municipal Code, or ORI, needed for any application by a resident of Wharton Borough or Mine Hill Township is NJ0143900. If this is not entered correct, the application will not go to Wharton Borough and there will be no refund by the State if it needs to be resubmitted correctly.

Complete the online application. Before beginning, make sure you have correct email addresses for two reputable references. When choosing references, please choose responsible and credible persons who will respond to the reference questions in a timely manner and that you have known for at least 3 years. Any delays in the reference responses will directly affect your background check time. Make sure you have good phone numbers for yourself.  Any non-working numbers, full voicemail systems, or failures to return agency phone calls will absolutely delay your application process.

Applicants must make sure their driver's license name, address, and date of birth are accurate and reflected accordingly on the application. You MUST enter your “Official Name”, you cannot utilize simplified versions of your names (Joe vs. Joseph). Inconsistencies will result in delayed applications or denial of service at firearms dealers.  Falsification of any information on an application or related document is a crime of the third degree (N.J.S.A. 2C:30-10c), and is a reason for denial.

All first time applicants MUST be fingerprinted, the fee and form needed to get fingerprinted will be provided to the applicant on the webpage.  The fee will be submitted to the location you will be printed at, NOT a Police Department. If you have been fingerprinted before for employment, clergy, volunteer, teaching, or other reasons, you still need to be fingerprinted for firearms purposes and so the State may assign you a Firearms Identification Number (SBI#).

Our background checks will not be conducted until the applicant has been fingerprinted or gone through their online background check. This is due to many applicants filing applications but not completing their required checks. It delays the process for those that have done what is required.

For any general firearms questions, you may check the New Jersey State Police website at http://www.njsp.org/firearms/firearms-faqs.shtml, or contact this agency's firearms Investigator.

If you have any questions not answered on the application or State Police website or you just cannot find what you are looking for, please contact the Wharton Borough Detective Bureau at 973-366-5893.

If you do not have your fingerprints completed within 90 days of submitting your application, you will be removed from the background investigation process
